Sea Turtle Awaits, Big Island
Sea Turtle Awaits, Big Island
all tortoises are turtles, but not all turtles are tortoises. I believe this beautiful creature is a sea turtle. Across many cultures, the turtle symbolizes longevity, resilience, and deep connection to the Earth. Its slow pace and deep breaths are part of what contributes to its long life. Perhaps if we, too, learned to slow down as a species, we could better protect the planet we call home—rather than endlessly extract from her. Some traditions even envision the Earth itself being carried on the back of a great turtle—a symbol of support, balance, and stability. And of course, the turtle’s shell is its home and its shield. In yoga, there’s a concept called pratyahara—the withdrawal of the senses, a turning inward that prepares us for meditation. Like the turtle, we draw into ourselves, cultivating calm, clarity, and resilience. When we manage our senses, we also consume less—and that, too, is an offering to the Earth. There is a universe within. The turtle reminds us to look there. And, This can help us relate better to earth outside. P.S. This encounter was nothing short of magical. As the sun was setting, I took a chance and drove to a beach where I hoped to see turtles—no clear signs, just a feeling. I parked randomly and hiked down a shadowy trail as twilight deepened. And there, waiting at the shoreline, was this divine being. I truly believe we were meant to meet. May we all carry forward some of the turtle’s wisdom.
